DJ Snuff

Background
: With DJ Residencies stretching back to 94 in Belfast N.Ireland, Snuff originally gained profile as the official DJ for the first generation 'Belfast City Breakers' aka 'Trouble Minded Crew'. At an early age the group had taken him under their wing through youth work and is to whom he credits as his main inspiration. These early years of Hip Hop Breaks, Crate Digging', DJ and B-Boy culture were at the forefront of building a true school Hip Hop identity providing a healthy alternative to the N.Ireland conflict, and brought with them DJ opportunities across Ireland and appearances at international Bboy events such as B.O.T.Y & Fresh '97/'98/'99.

When moving to London in '98 Snuff started work DJ'ing and heading up the street teams with 'Solo One' for leading Hip-Hop events Scratch [Kings Cross Scala] and Dekefex [Brixton Mass, hosted by 'Estelle' & 'Apollo']. Both events were playing host to the best in international Hip-Hop culture at the time. It's here and on the warehouse scene that he teamed up with London Hip-Hop artist 'Manage" to create the rap group 'Chain Of Command'. This led to among other highlights, a UK tour with the 'Foreign Beggars', a featured appearance at UK Takeover, various major concert support slots, festivals appearances and top billing at the majority of the UK's leading Hip Hop platforms. All this while hosting a weekly home-grown Hip Hop show on London’s only Hip Hop radio station 'Itch FM' [R.I.P], holding down the wheels for the notorious 'Deal Real Records' weekly Open Mic in central London with 'DJ Snips' and 'Doc Brown', and launching a Record Label under the name Merciless Music.

From these roots and experience Snuff created the 'Speakers Corner' platform in Brixton London which set rise to a renaissance in home grown conscious lyricism in Hip-Hop. Celebrated live elements include the highly acclaimed 'Speakers Corner Quartet' who had formed especially for the event. Running monthly with a 'Free Entry, Free Speech' policy, Speakers Corner as an event drew inspiration from London’s vibrant spoken word, live Jam & Hip Hop undercurrent’s to bring an amalgamation of creativity attracting artist and audiences nationwide. On any given night up to 150 lyricist would pass the mic. There are very few if any UK based Hip-Hop artist today that could say they never graced the stage at Speakers Corner. Its legacy still resonates with many. Speaker's Corner re-launched as a bi-monthly event at the beginning of 2011 and continues to be the countries leading live conscious Hip-Hop platform.

In 2006 Snuff & Speakers Corner teamed up with NYC's End Of The Weak [aka E.O.W aka EODUB] movement to run the international MC Challenge and open a worldwide Hip Hop portal. EODUB UK took hold of the International MC Championship title 3 seasons running undefeated and continues to help bring Hip Hop from the UK onto the international stage. EODUB has now placed DJ Snuff on a global platform and helped forge a wider community to keep the momentum of creative growth firmly in place with the core principles of Hip-Hop culture. Peace, Love, Unity & Having Fun. With Snuff's direction, End Of The Weak in the UK keeps with the creative live theme. The killer combination of SCQ master drummer 'Kwake', eMCee's 'Kingpin', 'Jack Flash', 'Stig Of The Dump', DJs 'Snuff', 'Jazz T' [ITF DJ Champ '99] and Bboy/girl crew 'Style Hybrids' all connect as the in-house assassins. UK EODUB family include Dubbledge, M9, Manage, Iron Braydz, Louisden Beats and so much more homegrown indisputable talent. EODUB worldwide family includes the 'Rock Steady Crew' and many shining stars of Hip-Hop's golden heritage. In 2010 Snuff and EOW chapter directors across Europe created an association named 'Youth In Action' which was granted EU funding to facilitate a 14 day 50+ international artist exchange program. EU inspection described the open learning program as 'revolutionary'. This program still continues. Many major European festivals also invite EOW to host and program stages, including Splash! Festival in Germany.

After several trips to New York bridging roots and working with many EOW luminaries, including original EODUB triple threat Scram Jones 'Beast Music', Snuff was soon drafted in as the official European tour and show DJ for New Jersey Rap group 'Mohammad Dangerfield' [Hasan Salaam & RuggedNRaw] with 2 UK tours and 1 European tour already covered. This international flavour see's Snuff hitting up clubs all across Germany, Spain, France, Brazil and the USA. Snuff has also toured with international artist Immortal Technique [including organising Tech's first ever Belfast show and Tech's first London Q&A at SOAS university]. On home ground DJ Snuff can be found playing in groups such as Maverick Sabre, Aruba Red, Caxton Press + more. Highlight performances have included shows opening for Snoop Dogg, Pharaohe Monch, Ghostface killah, ONYX, Jedi Mind Tricks, Talib Kweli, Joell Ortiz, The Roots, The Beatnuts, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, The Last Poets, Sha Stimuli, RA The Rugged Man, Styles P, Scram Jones, Saigon, Dead Prez, DJ Premier and many others.

Another major development that has come out of the Speakers Corner camp is the creation of 'The Peoples Army' movement co-founded by Snuff, Logic & Lowkey alongside English Frank, Big Cakes and an entire entourage of conscious lyricist and community activist. The Peoples Army set its principles as "To energise the collective diversity of those of us willing to take determined responsible control of our own environment. To acknowledge our dutiful responsibility to nurture our culture. To facilitate activities that educate and provide guidance to our youth." The UK addition of The Peoples Army is recognised by RGB rap group 'Dead Prez' [with whom Snuff also co-organised a Q&A reasoning session on the subject of 'Holistic, Self Sustainable, Co-opperative Living in Revolutionary, Practical and Spiritual Terms']. This activity has now developed into the public debating and campaign platform 'The Equality Movement' also in collaboration with Lowkey, Logic and Jody McIntyre [Journalist/Documentary maker]

Often credited as being a backbone in the cultural development of Hip Hop in the UK, Snuff has been an invited guest curator for institutions as varied as the Tate Modern, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Jazz Cafe, The Roundhouse & SOAS University. As a co-founding member of the Peoples Army movement this wealth of experience will not go un-channelled. Catch DJ Snuff live representing EODUB, Speakers Corner, Peoples Army & The Louis Den Beat Cypher collective at various Open Mics, Concerts & Club Residencies worldwide.
